In today's economy, it is nearly impossible for a merchant to stay competitive without the ability to process credit card transactions from customers. For small businesses,

The Survival Guide for Small Businesses explains that a
merchant account is vastly different than a business bank account, as the former is used to accept payments from customers, while the latter simply deals with the day-to-day expenses of running a business, like paying bills, replenishing inventory and buying supplies.
Within the realm of merchant accounts, a number of different types of arrangements exist. A retail account, for example, is best suited for businesses solely operating out of brick-and-mortar locations, while businesses with an online sales presence must look into accounts that can process payments over the internet.
Before deciding on a merchant account, it is important that a business asks many questions and fully understands all of the service charges and fees that apply to the contract. Before signing anything, business owners must be aware of all potential set-up, equipment or charge-back fees.
Shopping around is the best way to compare offerings and prices before choosing the ideal merchant account.
"When negotiating the terms of a contract, let your provider of choice know if you’ve been offered a better deal elsewhere. This may get you the terms you want. Check the Better Business Bureau to learn more about the provider’s reputation and business rating before signing a contract," explains the site.
According to Travel Market Report, merchant accounts are available for every type of venture, whether they are home-based small businesses or large retailers.
"You still have some agents that just think it [processing credit cards] is beyond their reach or that they don’t have the resources available to them. But the resources are definitely there," travel industry veteran Jim Smith, CTIE, principal at jimsmithctie, inc., told the news source.
Some smaller, home-based professionals many not have access to a traditional merchant account through the nation's largest
payment processing companies, but mobile payment technologies and the various ground-breaking businesses entering the field are now offering user-friendly applications. These apps are not just easy to use, but could help merchants in certain industries deemed "high risk," such as travel, that were previously unable to access merchant accounts.
