A study unveiled at the National Retail Federation convention in 2012 by NCR Corporations revealed that 72 percent of customers are more likely to shop at a retail location that offers them more payment options. Respondents showed a preference for stores that gave them the ability to use online, mobile and kiosk self-serve channels over those that provided only one option.

Other findings in the study revealed that over 50 percent of shoppers are using the internet to frequently compare prices and check products, 46 percent want to receive promotions and product information from retailers, and almost half are switching between retailers to get a better deal.

"Consumers in these uncertain times are clearly showing a preference for retailers that can meet their expectations through self-service options on the web, mobile and in store. These technologies are playing a growing role in helping retailers deliver competitive advantage," said Mike Webster, the chief strategy and communications officer for NCR Corporation.

Stores that are outfitted with self-checkout kiosks can offer more personalized service in the aisle, answering questions and helping customers find products or promotional items instead of using most of the sales force at the point of sale terminals. Retailers can now choose from a variety credit card processing options to offer customers the best card payment services for their location.
