Sports apparel sales increase through ecommerce
04/06/2012 - By Alexander Galasso
Sales of licensed sports gear were on the rise this year.
Following the overall trend of online apparel sales, licensed sports merchandise purchases were up 5.3 percent in Canada and the U.S. last year, according to independent trade publication The Licensing Letter
In a recent study, eMarketer
revealed that online retail sales were largely being driven by apparel sales. During 2011, clothing and accessories merchants racked up $34.2 billion in online payment processing
, and the study predicts that could increase 20 percent to $40.9 billion by the end of 2012. At the same time, retail sales of licensed sports gear increased to $12.79 billion.
Leaders in the sector were Major League Baseball and National Football League franchises, each accounting for one-quarter of total sales. Major League Soccer sales rose an impressive 25 percent during the year. Thanks to new franchises in Portland and Vancouver as well as the LA Galaxy's championship, total sales rose to $394 million, The Licensing Letter explained.
"While this data focuses on the U.S./Canada, international markets are where many of the leagues and other sports entities have been expanding in recent years," says Ira Mayer, Publisher of The Licensing Letter. "The NBA and MLB are making particularly strong efforts internationally."
As sales continue to rise, businesses can make sure to capture the largest portion of consumer spending by investing in new virtual credit card processing
systems that can handle a high volume of sales.
