Retail owners might be able to optimize sales by engaging with customers through ecommerce and social commerce. Online shopping sales have increased for eight straight quarters and grown by double-digits for the past four. In 2011, online spending was up 13 percent for year-over-year growth, reaching $36.3 billion overall.

A study released by digital marketing firm Digitas indicates that consumers would benefit from the ability to get product reviews and recommendations from people they trust when using social media for shopping. Of those surveyed, 75 percent responded that they would be more likely to purchase products or services that have been endorsed by an individual in their social network.

Additionally, 34 percent of respondents said that they would be more likely to relay information to their network about a purchase they had made through a social media site than a traditional ecommerce store. And 20 percent said that they would like to be able to buy products and services from their favorite brands on a site like Facebook or Twitter.

To maximize sales through the developing social commerce market, retail businesses can develop an online presence that will best meet the needs of customers. Web-based stores and merchant pages on social networking sites can also offer the convenience of debit and credit card processing online.
