As of this year, all businesses, including web-based retailers, that process credit cards are required to follow the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). These standards were set in place to ensure that merchants with credit payment services protect card holders from online fraud. Some companies are offering advice to clear up terms and regulations, which can be confusing for retailers trying to reduce PCI exposure and stay in compliance.

"With my small business, the task of understanding and complying with the PCI requirements seemed a bit overwhelming," said Dave Stanley a publisher for the New Hampton Tribune in New Hampton, Iowa.

The PCI DSS standards were established in 2004 as an answer to high-profile security breaches. PCI compliance ensures that customers' credit card information is securely encrypted, processed and transferred. Businesses that do not follow the standards can face fines and penalties as well as put customers at risk for theft and fraud.

In order to ensure that retailers are protecting confidential customer information when they accept credit cards online, small business owners can invest in a payment provider that offers services to help them become PCI compliant. With fraud managment solutions, they can securely process and store cardholder information to protect customers from data breaches.
