The healthcare industry is following the example set by retailers and restaurants with its efforts to provide customers with more convenient
payment processing methods. Whereas in the past, patients usually paid by check, many healthcare facilities now accept credit cards and have started incorporating systems that facilitate online and even mobile transactions.
A developer recently announced the introduction of a mobile
point-of-sale terminal that makes it easy for doctors to accept payments. The smartphone-based device also allows them to look up insurance information so they can generate more accurate bills at the point-of-care.
Similarly, 1-800-contacts, a web-based contact lens store, has started accepting mobile orders to speed up its service.
"We're always looking for ways to make ordering contact lenses faster and easier for our customers," said Jonathan C. Coon, chief executive officer of the company. "After cash, the credit card is the number one way to pay in the United States."
To accommodate consumers' preferred payment method, the eyecare company deployed a platform that allows for quicker transactions by drastically cutting back on the amount of information customers have to input to make a purchase.
Similarly, retailers might recognize a decreased cart abandonment rate both in brick-and-mortar stores as well as ecommerce sites when they make payments more convenient.
