There was big news recently for residents of one North Dakota community, after its city council approved a new way to pay for public utilities.

The city of Minot announced that it would now accept credit cards and debit cards for the services after the city council gave its approval during a recent meeting. According to Cindy Hemphill, Minot's finance director, there have already been benefits to the new payment processing system, with fewer water shut-offs occurring. Prior to the city accepting cards, a person would be forced to appear at city hall and give the government cash or risk having his or her water shut off.

While the utility department is the only current agency accepting the card payment, Hemphill said that now that they had set up a way to get it done, it would be easy for other departments to begin getting the process underway.

Other municipalities in North Dakota are finding ways to accept credit cards for other services. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports that the city of Argus is considering installing 10 to 20 new parking meters which will accept credit cards
