Mobile payment technologies have created quite a stir. Experts hold that such devices are truly market disrupting and game-changing, and new applications for the innovation seem to be emerging all the time.

Most recently, tech leaders began to test mobile-enabled vending machines. On Monday, developers kicked off a seven-city tour in Boston, Massachusetts, placing the machines on display in public areas for free use by consumers and passers-by.

"When you go out and see some of these machines it’s like an iPhone," Dan Matthews, vice president of the National Automatic Merchandising Association, told Macworld. "They're all touchscreens, they're all interactive. The produce will move 3D towards you."

Users can also rotate the product to see the ingredients label. Developers claim the products are intended for Generation Y audiences and will test 20 of them in Boston with hopes to expand to New York City, Atlanta, Austin, Phoenix, Minneapolis and Madison, Wisconsin.

Currently, the devices accept cash, credit and debit, but operators hope they can eventually install mobile payment technologies, thereby offering consumers a truly diverse range of transaction options.
