Credit card processing isn't just for retailers and restaurants

As credit and debit cards have gained popularity, organizations that only accepted cash in the past have started to invest in point-of-sale terminals that can process payment cards. Now, people have the option of paying taxes online, utility bills by card and even take care of library late fees without stopping at an ATM first.

The City of Grand Rapids, Michigan, started accepting credit and debit cards online for water-sewer bills last year, according to The Michigan Business Review. The number of online payments has risen 62 percent, and now more than 3,600 transactions are completed through the website every month.

"The more that gets done online, there's less processing work in receiving and opening and scanning and applying payments," Pam Ritsema, the city’s managing director of enterprise services told the news source. "Ultimately, if we can reduce the personnel needed, it reduces the amount of revenue we need to run the water and sewer system."

The state of Kentucky also recently updated its child support division website so parents can make credit card payments for court-ordered fees or child support payments.

Similar organizations might find that investing in a payment processing solution enables them to streamline transactions so they can spend more time performing other important duties.
