Gaining a competitive edge is a major priority for many vendors, which is leading more merchants to invest in top-of-the-line credit card processing solutions. Additionally, more retailers are evaluating their social media outreach and searching for new ways to connect with clients, a trend that may continue in the near future.

Monetate's Ecommerce Quarterly report for the first three months of 2013 showed that social media accounted for 1.55 percent of all e-commerce traffic during this time frame. Study researchers also found that smartphones and tablets were roughly 21 percent of all traffic, which reflects the increased use of mobile devices among online shoppers.

Internet Retailer points out that numerous e-commerce retail websites are investing in social media marketing campaigns to boost their sales. However, Aime Schwartz, new media coordinator at King Arthur Flour, notes that online merchants must engage clients to get their attention on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

"The key is to make content that is as shareable as possible," Schwartz told the news source. "People coming to our site from social outlets are looking to be inspired, to share recipes with friends and get validation from their peers."
