Retailers in border town and tourist destinations might be experiencing sales growth and steady numbers at their point-of-sale terminals, according to CBC News. The sources reports on two recent reports from the Ottawa-Gatineau Hotel Association and Conference Board of Canada, respectively, that found the tourism industry was performing well. As a result, retail stores, restaurants and transportation businesses have been adding jobs to accommodate growth.

"The average hotel occupancy rate in Ottawa is quite healthy now, the envy of many other cities," said study author Barry Nabatian.

To keep tourism going strong, the Government of Canada has decided to revise the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MSVA) to ease restrictions on cross-border vehicle rentals. Rob Nicholson, the minister of justice and attorney general of Canada said this largely represents the government's overall goals of stimulating job growth and improving the economy. Both can benefit from the tourism industry.

If businesses are operating in popular tourist destinations, they might want to update their payment processing services to reflect the needs of their customers. For example, the largest portion of Canadian consumers say they use ecommerce when making travel arrangements according to a study by WorldPay. Hotels and restaurants might want to develop websites that can accept credit card payments virtually, while retailers may consider building a page that provides directions so tourists can easily locate the store.
